Desperate 25-Year-Old Attempts To Burn & Break ATM Machine To Pay Off Loan Sharks

CCTV footage revealed that he brought two fuel canisters to burn the ATM.

A Malaysian man tried to break an automated teller machine (ATM) at a bank in Wangsa Melawati, Kuala Lumpur

The Wangsa Maju district police headquarters' Criminal Investigation Division received a public call about burn marks on an ATM that were thought to be caused by an attempt to break the machine on Monday, 24 October.

Closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage confirmed that a man had tried to break the ATM by burning the machine with two fuel canisters.

The suspect, a 25-year-old man, was arrested on Wednesday, 26 October, at 12.45am

The police also seized the suspect's clothes that he had worn during the incident, the fuel canisters, and his vehicle.

The suspect was thought to have attempted to break the ATM as a desperate measure to pay off his loan shark debts

"Further investigation revealed that the suspect acted in this manner because he was desperate to pay off his loans quickly as he owed a lot of money to an 'ah long' (an unlicensed moneylender)," said Wangsa Maju district police chief Supt Ashari Abu Samah, reported Kosmo.

The suspect is on remand until today, 28 October, and is being investigated under Section 435 of the Penal Code for causing mischief by fire and Section 380/511 of the Penal Code for attempting to steal.
