Parents can no longer use the abbreviated name 'Mohd' when registering their children's names

In a Threads post on 5 May, the National Registration Department's Penang office (JPNPP) reminded parents that the abbreviation is no longer accepted and must be written in full instead.

"Names that are no longer used by children today: Mohd. The name should be written in full as Mohamad, Muhamad, or Muhammad," it said.

The notice serves as a reminder of an existing rule, where abbreviations like "Abd" and "Mohd" are not allowed and must be spelled out fully as "Abdul" and "Muhammad".

The post still sparked various reactions, especially among those who have "Mohd" on their identity cards

"So, does this mean those of us born in the '80s with 'Mohd' are now rare items?" one netizen joked. JPNPP replied cheekily, "Any rarer, and they'll become national treasures."

Others welcomed the move, saying standardising names on identity cards would make things easier. "Good. This way, people won't have to keep asking how to spell it," one comment read.

"I'm from the generation with 'Mohd' on our ICs, but it does look nicer when written in full as Muhammad," another user shared.
