Malaysian Muslim couples who get married abroad without registering with the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) will not be recognised by the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS)

According to MAIS chairman Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof, couples will not be recognised despite the marriage being legal in Islam, reported Bernama.

He stressed that failure to register a marriage will lead to a variety of problems for the couples in the future.

"For example, when it comes to dealing with their children who are getting married, it will be difficult if the parents' marriage is not registered and recognised in Selangor," said Aziz.

It also would cause problems when it comes to division of inheritance.

In addition, Aziz said Selangor will not acknowledge any wedding package offered in other countries, including Thailand and Indonesia

Aziz, instead, encouraged local couples to get married in Malaysia, where no problems will arise.

"We hold a marriage course that no other country offers where they can ask questions about the rukun nikah (the conditions set out under Islamic law for the marriage solemnisation)," he said.

"JAIS has enough registrars and marriage counsellors in every district statewide, so there is no prohibition for any Muslim couple to get married with existing procedures."

"However, there are still couples who want to get married abroad. We never recognise these marriages, including the party that offers such packages."
