OKU Man Accused Of Deliberately Injuring His Own Eye To Claim RM1 Million Insurance Money
The man has three kids and is unemployed.
A 52-year-old unemployed father of three in Penang was charged at the Butterworth Magistrate's Court with deliberately injuring his own left eye to claim insurance compensation totalling RM1 million
He is alleged to have attempted to make a false insurance accident claim application after committing the act between 9am and 6pm in Kampung Gajah, Butterworth on 8 June last year.
He is also accused of deceiving the insurance company with the false claim, prompting the company to deposit RM4,153.57 into his Maybank account on 20 July last year.
The visually impaired (OKU) man, Tan Kok Guan, however, pleaded not guilty after the charges were read to him by an interpreter in front of Magistrate Siti Zulaikha Nordin @ Ghani, reported Berita Harian.
He has been charged under Section 420 of the Penal Code
If found guilty, he can be jailed for not less than a year and not more than 10 years.
While deputy public prosecutor Airina Syazreena Zainurin offered RM16,000 bail for both charges with one surety against the accused, defence lawyer Yaw Xinying asked the court for leniency.
"He is also facing heart disease and a stroke. My client has cooperated throughout his investigation. Therefore, I am asking for a minimal guarantee," Yaw said.
Following which, the Magistrate set a bail of RM10,000 with a guarantor.
20 February has been set for the re-arraignment of the case and submission of documents.
