The Forbes' 2024 Net Zero Leaders List has seen Philip Morris International (PMI) emerge as the US company best positioned to reduce its greenhouse gas output

Leveraging data from Sustainalytics and Morningstar to determine its rankings, the Forbes 2024 Net Zero Leaders list ranked PMI above 100 other public companies in the US for its commitment to a net zero future.

Other factors considered included corporate management structure to aid in risk assessment, governance, strategy, metrics to achieve decarbonisation goals, as well as financial strength to weather competition and industry turmoil.

"Our approach to sustainability goes beyond minimising negative externalities and mitigating risks," said PMI Chief Sustainability Officer Jennifer Motles.

"Deeply connected to our transformation strategy, sustainability has always been intended to embody a profound opportunity for innovation, growth, and long-term value creation," she added.

With regards to its operations in Malaysia, a PMI spokesperson highlighted several ways the brand is aiming to fulfil its commitment to a net zero future

According to Naeem Shahab Khan, the Managing Director at PMI Malaysia, the brand has followed through on its sustainability promise by moving its headquarters to an award-winning efficient green building that maximises energy and water efficiency.

In 2023, the company also launched its Circular Programme, designed to provide its consumers with easy ways to collect and return PMI products at the end of their lifecycles, thus preventing a substantial number of devices from becoming waste.

"Our sustainability initiatives in Malaysia are multifaceted and highlight our commitment to environmental and social responsibilities, including our climate strategy which addresses pertinent climate change-related risks, builds resilience, and seizes opportunities presented by a low-carbon future," said Naeem.

This is the second consecutive year in which PMI has landed among the top 10 US companies on the same list

Other distinctions that have highlighted the brand's sustainability commitment include its inclusion in the CDP's Supplier Engagement Leader Board for the seventh year in 2024, achieving a CDP Triple A rating for the fourth consecutive year in 2024, and an inclusion in the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI) for the first time in 2023.
