[VIDEO] MAS Flight Makes Emergency Landing After Sparks Fly From Engine Mid-Air
Malaysia Airlines Flight 199 was carrying 131 passengers and seven crew members.
A Malaysia Airlines (MAS) flight bound for Kuala Lumpur from Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad, India, made an emergency landing after the aircraft experienced an engine malfunction
MH199, carrying 131 passengers and seven crew members, took off at 12.45am today, 20 June, but was forced to turn back to the Hyderabad airport when sparks emanated from the plane's right engine.
Indian English-language newspaper Business Standard reported that the MAS flight travelled at a maximum altitude of 29,000ft before descending to 19,000ft. It further lowered to an altitude of 7,200ft, which it maintained until the last 15 minutes before landing at Hyderabad airport.
The plane is a Boeing 737-800.
MAS has not yet issued any statements
However, a MAS representative confirmed with The Hindu that the aircraft experienced engine failure shortly after takeoff and returned to the Hyderabad airport.
"We are assisting the passengers at the airport. Accommodation has been provided at a hotel, although some passengers from Hyderabad chose to return home. We are working to arrange an alternative flight by this evening," the Indian English-language newspaper quoted the MAS representative as saying.
