Police have clarified that the Proton X50 involved in the crash that killed six members of the same family in Kedah on 7 June was actually driven by 21-year-old Ahmad Fahim Ahmad Shukri
Kedah police chief Datuk Adzli Abu Shah said an earlier report had incorrectly identified the driver due to the severe damage sustained by the vehicle in the crash.
Initial reports stated that the SUV was being driven by Ahmad Syafiq Ahmad Shukri, 29, a police officer who was also Ahmad Fahim's older brother.
However, further investigations found that Ahmad Fahim was behind the wheel at the time of the incident.
According to Adzli, Ahmad Fahim was also the owner of the Proton X50, which he had reportedly purchased just a day before the crash.
The tragedy occurred in Kampung Baru Pinang Tunggal, Sungai Petani, where the SUV carrying seven family members collided with a lorry transporting soil.
The crash claimed six lives, while one survivor sustained serious injuries.
Five victims were laid to rest in Merbok, while the youngest victim was buried in Penang
Five of the victims were laid to rest at the Masjid Al Abidi Islamic Cemetery in Merbok at around 10am earlier today, 8 June.
Meanwhile, seven-year-old Iskandar Affan Ibrahim was buried earlier at the Masjid Permatang Kuang Islamic Cemetery in Penaga, Penang.
The sole survivor of the crash, three-year-old Aulia Sofea Ahmad Shafiq, remains seriously injured.
The lorry driver involved in the crash was not hurt, and was released after the Sungai Petani Magistrate's Court rejected a police application to remand him for further investigation.
Police have since confirmed that the investigation is ongoing.
Following the crash, a dashcam video recorded from a vehicle travelling along the narrow two-lane road has surfaced, showing how the catastrophic head-on collision unfolded
The footage, taken from a back dashboard camera, shows the SUV travelling behind the dashcam vehicle along Jalan Kampung Baru Pinang Tunggal.
At around the 16-second mark, the X50 appears to veer off its lane and into oncoming traffic. At the 19-second mark, a 10-tonne lorry carrying soil comes into frame from the opposite direction, travelling steadily within its lane.
At the 21-second mark, the X50 crashes into the lorry head-on, with the front section of the SUV taking the full force of the impact.
