The 2025 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) results released today, 31 March, recorded its best overall performance in five years, said Education director-general Datuk Dr Mohd Azam Ahmad

According to the New Straits Times, the National Average Grade (GPK) improved to 4.42 in 2025, compared to 4.49 in 2024. A lower GPK score reflects better overall performance.

The GPK is calculated by converting individual subject grades into grade points (e.g. A=1, B=2, C=3), and is used by the Ministry of Education to measure candidates' overall achievement in national examinations.

"I am pleased to share that, overall, candidates' performance in SPM 2025 based on the GPK index is the best since the introduction of the Standard Secondary School Curriculum (KSSM) in 2021.

"Congratulations to all candidates for their commitment and hard work in achieving this success," he said during a press conference today.

Meanwhile, the performance gap between urban and rural candidates has narrowed to just 0.41 points

Azam said urban candidates recorded a GPK of 4.40, while rural candidates achieved 4.81 this year, both showing improvement from the previous year's scores of 4.47 and 4.92 respectively.

He added that a total of 13,779 candidates achieved excellent results by scoring A+, A, and A- in all subjects, including 376 candidates who obtained straight A+.

Meanwhile, the number of candidates who obtained at least a credit in all subjects increased to 92,347 in 2025, up from 86,040 the year before.

Out of 413,299 candidates who sat the SPM examination at 3,350 exam centres nationwide last year, 366,435 candidates (94.29%) qualified for the SPM certificate.
