Italian racing prodigy Kimi Antonelli produced a mature, ice-cool drive at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez on Sunday, securing third place at the Mexican Grand Prix to claim his maiden Formula One world championship

At just 20 years of age, Antonelli has officially eclipsed Sebastian Vettel's long-standing benchmark, set at age 23 in 2010, to become the youngest drivers' champion in Formula One history.

The Bologna native also became Italy's first title-winner since legendary racer Alberto Ascari lifted the crown in 1953. His triumph marks Mercedes' 10th drivers' crown, and its first since Lewis Hamilton's final championship triumph with the Silver Arrows in 2020.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen clinched a feisty race victory from fifth on the grid, yet the Dutchman's polished drive was overshadowed by Antonelli's title celebrations and an acrimonious intra-team fallout between Ferrari drivers Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc

Antonelli, who joined Mercedes' junior programme at age 12 before stepping into Hamilton's vacated seat, needed only a ninth-place finish to make the weekend. Starting fourth on the grid, the young Italian kept out of trouble as drama unfolded ahead of him.

Off the line, Leclerc aggressively challenged Hamilton for the lead into turn four. He cut across the runoff area to retain the advantage before refusing to yield the position. Stewards swiftly slapped Leclerc with a five-second penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage.

The decision infuriated Hamilton, who argued his teammate should have been ordered to hand the position back rather than run in clean air

"The stewards are basically handing Charles this win," Hamilton fumed over team radio, warning that the Scuderia faced "big, big problems" during post-race debriefs.

The fiery exchanges paused on lap 31 when a high-speed suspension failure pitched Valtteri Bottas into the turn-one barrier, bringing out a red flag

Bottas walked away unhurt. Upon the standing restart, Hamilton climbed into second place while Antonelli surged into third, cruising cleanly to the chequered flag to conclude an extraordinary campaign with four Grand Prix meetings still to spare.

The title crowns an astonishing second year in the top tier for Antonelli. After taking the points lead following April's Japanese Grand Prix, the Italian dominated the first half of the season, scoring nine victories, including an audacious drive from 19th on the grid to win his home Grand Prix in Monza.

With 2026 title matters settled, Mercedes and Red Bull now look ahead to a titanic 2027 scrap.
