A Singaporean woman was sentenced to three weeks in jail on Friday, 22 November, after pleading guilty to attempting to bribe an auxiliary police officer at Woodlands Checkpoint on 17 July

According to Malay Mail, 42-year-old Wang Xiping was driving towards Johor Bahru when she accidentally entered the bus lane at the checkpoint.

An officer noticed the traffic violation and instructed her to turn back and use the correct lane designated for cars.

In response, Wang offered the officer RM50 and later SGD50 (approximately RM166).

However, the officer rejected both bribes, requested her passport, and informed her that their interaction was being recorded on his body-worn camera.

Wang was arrested at 11.30am the same day, and later released on bail

During investigations, Wang claimed she had mistaken the auxiliary police officer for a Malaysian officer and offered the bribe out of "anxiety" and poor communication skills.

She also said she believed the officer refused the initial bribe because he wanted a higher amount.

Despite her explanations, the prosecution emphasised that she attempted to bribe the officer twice, with both attempts occurring within Singapore's jurisdiction

In court, Wang appealed for leniency, explaining that she is responsible for caring for her four children, the youngest being less than a year old.

She also requested for postponement of her sentence to make childcare arrangements, citing that her husband is overseas for business, which the district judge granted.
