A decomposed body that was discovered in Banting last month has been identified as that of a 15-year-old girl missing since 19 December

The girl, Yap Xin Yuan, had gone for lion dance practice at a basketball court in Batu 11 Cheras, Balakong, on 19 December. Her family lodged a police report after she did not return home.

The body was discovered on 28 December, at RTB Sungai Changgang, Kuala Langat.

According to Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan, while the body could not be identified through physical features, a DNA analysis that matched the body to Yap's mother confirmed its identity.

Earlier, a preliminary autopsy revealed that the body's features — including height, braces, clothing, and accessories — were similar to those of Yap at the time she went missing.

A missing poster of Yap Xin Yuan was shared on social media by her family on 20 December.

Since then, her boyfriend and two others have been arrested in connection with the case, which has been reclassified as murder

The three suspects, aged 16, 20, and 51, have been remanded for seven days until 5 January.

The other two men are believed to be the boyfriend's elder brother and their father.

The trio were arrested after police found discrepancies in the boyfriend's earlier statement.

He had claimed that Yap left his home at around 5pm on 19 December after they had an argument. However, CCTV footage near his residence showed her only arriving via an e-hailing cab.

While the police are investigating the case, local Chinese-language dailies have reported that the boyfriend has confessed to dumping the missing girl's body into the river with the help of his family

According to reports, Yap met the boy a couple of months ago at the lion dance centre.

During questioning on 31 December, the boyfriend reportedly confessed to dumping Yap's body into the river.

China Press and Sin Chew Daily cited anonymous sources revealing that the boyfriend claimed he and Yap had drunk beverages laced with drugs together. However, Yap reportedly overdosed.

The 16-year-old claimed to have panicked, and with his family's help, dumped Yap's body in a secluded area of Sungai Changgang, which is said to be infested with crocodiles.

Meanwhile, the Selangor police chief told media that they expect to extend the trio's remand after it expires on 5 January in order to determine the motive behind the murder.
