Albania has appointed a digital assistant as the world's first 'virtually created' AI cabinet minister
The AI, named Diella, has been tasked with overseeing public procurement in an ambitious bid to eliminate corruption from government tenders.
Diella, which means 'Sun' in Albanian, previously served as an advisor on the state's e-Albania portal, helping citizens access digital services.
According to Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, the AI, dubbed the 'servant of public procurement', will help make Albania "a country where public tenders are 100% free of corruption"
The prime minister explained that the AI will objectively examine every government tender, removing the decision-making process from human hands. This is to prevent bribes and conflicts of interest, The Guardian reported.
While some local media have praised the move as a "major transformation" in governance, not everyone is optimistic about the new appointment, as some citizens remain sceptical
Public tenders have long been a source of corruption scandals in the country, leading many to doubt whether an AI can truly solve the problem.
"In Albania, even Diella will be corrupted," one user commented on Facebook, reflecting a wider public cynicism towards tackling deep-rooted graft.
