An experimental 1.1-tonne maglev train accelerated from zero to 800km/h in a mind-boggling 5.3 seconds at the Donghu Laboratory in China's Hubei Province recently

According to The Independent, the levitating vehicle completed its sprint across a 1km test track before safely coming to a complete stop within 200m.

The test marks the third time the train had broken its own record in six months

The vehicle was first tested in June 2025, reaching 650km/h in seven seconds, before shattering its own record with subsequent runs reaching 700km/h and 798km/h.

During the trials, researchers pushed key technologies to the limit

These included high-power energy delivery, electromagnetic propulsion, high-speed levitation control, and emergency braking systems.

While commercial maglevs like China's Fuxing Rail currently top out at 350km/h, engineers hope these extreme tests could eventually aid space launches, military jets, and vacuum-tube transit.
