One year after the launch of the new Proton X50 in July 2025, national carmaker PROTON continues to lead the local SUV market
The popular model recorded 32,254 units sold during its first 12 months, highlighting strong demand for the X50 despite growing competition in the local automotive market.
Here's why the Proton X50 continues to be one of the country's top SUVs.
1. It helped transform the B-segment SUV market
When the X50 first launched in 2020, it quickly became a popular choice among Malaysians looking for a compact SUV, offering a combination of design, performance, and safety features.
Five years later, competition in the segment has become much stronger. However, the X50 remains a strong contender, with its combination of value and performance continuing to appeal to Malaysian buyers.

2. X50 owners have built a strong local community
Since its initial release in 2020, nearly 175,000 units of the X50 have been sold worldwide.
The SUV appeals to a wide range of owners, from first-time car buyers to growing families looking for a vehicle for their daily commutes.
Active owner groups on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and XiaoHongShu also highlight the strong following the model has built among Malaysian drivers.
3. Data shows that over 30,000 X50s were sold in the past year
The 32,254 units sold over the past year give a sense of how popular the X50 remains.
If all these cars were lined up bumper to bumper, they would form a line stretching 132km, roughly the distance between Kuala Lumpur and Melaka.
Assuming each vehicle travels an average of 20,000km per year, the combined distance covered by the fleet would exceed 603 million kilometres.
That's equivalent to driving around the Earth more than 15,000 times.

4. The Proton X50 is equipped with impressive tech and safety features
Regular tech updates have helped the SUV keep its lead. PROTON upgraded the engine from its original three-cylinder turbo to a four-cylinder option.
The car also features the local "Hi PROTON" voice system.
For safety, the SUV uses Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and holds a 5-Star ASEAN NCAP safety rating, giving drivers peace of mind on every journey.
5. The younger crowd really loves the local SUV
Data shows that the average X50 owner is just 36 years old, highlighting its strong appeal among young working adults.
Colour choices also show changing local tastes. Snow White leads sales at 31%, followed by Teal Bayou Green at 24% and Armour Silver at 18%.
Backed by the brand's partnership with Geely, the model continues to offer a practical and safe drive for Malaysian families.
