Malaysia is officially moving away from third-party tech vendors to secure its sovereign data

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has mandated that all future government digital services be developed strictly in-house.

According to Bernama, the directive aims to protect citizens' privacy, boost civil service talent, and maintain total control over infrastructure.

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil announced the new policy following a cabinet meeting in Putrajaya on 5 June

Fahmi explained that the change ensures the government maintains direct, unhindered access to its own source code.

"This takes into account data security and sovereignty aspects, direct access to source code, as well as talent development, particularly among civil servants," he said.

The National Digital Department is set to actively coordinate the transition under the purview of the Digital Ministry

Anwar said the strategic pivot aims to cultivate a tech-savvy generation of civil servants.
