Hybrid cars are rapidly becoming the preferred choice for Malaysian motorists transitioning towards greener transport options
Data from data.gov.my reveals 29,769 hybrid vehicles were registered between January and July 2026, representing a 78.9% surge from 16,643 units registered over the same period last year.
July alone saw 5,622 hybrid registrations, more than double last year's figure of 2,476.

Meanwhile, fully electric vehicle (EV) registrations climbed 94.1% year-on-year to 38,675 units
With public charging points still relatively sparse across the country, many motorists seeking lower emissions see hybrids as a more practical alternative to battery EVs.
In a report by The Star, Malaysian motorists interviewed said they had considered buying an EV before ultimately opting for a hybrid to cut fuel costs and emissions.
One of the main reasons influencing their decision was the lack of EV charging stations.
Hybrid vehicles also offer greater convenience as motorists can refuel at petrol stations as usual, helping to ease range anxiety.
