If you're a motorsports fan, you've probably sent the Formula 1 car emoji to your friends on WhatsApp

The emoji depicts a red racing car, but eagle-eyed users may have noticed a slight change in its design. If the updated emoji looks familiar to you, that's because it's supposed to resemble the legendary Mercedes W14 Formula 1 car.

Teaming up with the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 team, WhatsApp is rolling out this new emoji in conjunction with the upcoming Miami Grand Prix this weekend, Sunday, 5 May.

Aside from the WhatsApp emoji, the two massive brands are taking over the Empire State Building in New York for a light show

Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 driver Lewis Hamilton, and Team Principal Toto Wolff recently flipped the Empire State Building’s light switch, illuminating the iconic tower in WhatsApp's vibrant green hue.

This lighting spectacle was accompanied by an exciting light show, where the building's façade showcased an animated projection of the new emoji racing through the streets of New York City.

The festivities will carry on tomorrow, 1 May, as WhatsApp and Mercedes-AMG F1 team up to bring the emoji to life with a groundbreaking event. For the first time ever, Fifth Avenue will be closed off for a special demonstration featuring a Formula 1 car in the heart of Manhattan.

Hamilton will take the wheel for this thrilling speed demonstration, accompanied by a life-sized replica of the emoji race car, promising an unforgettable experience for racing enthusiasts and spectators alike.
