The National Registration Department (JPN) has launched a new-generation MyKad with 53 advanced security features today, 17 September

Malaysia's new-generation national identity card now comes with 53 advanced security features, up from 23 in the previous version.

"After more than two decades, the time has come for a new generation to take its place, bringing improvements to the MyKad's design, structure, and security features," the department said, according to the New Straits Times.

The new MyKad is equipped with a sophisticated chip with significantly stronger encryption capabilities, designed to strengthen identity verification while vastly reducing the risk of forgery and misuse

It incorporates physical security layers like hologram technology, laser engraving, microtext, and ultraviolet features.

A new QR code has also been integrated directly into the card to enable quick verification and assist enforcement authorities.

Applying for the new MyKad will be incredibly fast, as 40 JPN branches nationwide are ready to print and issue the new cards on the same day

This wider launch follows an initial rollout at the JPN headquarters in Putrajaya and 18 selected offices, which operated strictly through an appointment system.

Despite the exciting new features, JPN advised the public not to rush to replace their current cards, as the phased rollout will happen gradually without the need for immediate replacements.
