On 18 December, Twitter announced that they will be suspending accounts giving "free promotions" to other social media platforms

In a tweet via @TwitterSupport, Twitter announced that it will begin suspending accounts "created solely for the purpose of promoting other social platforms", which includes Facebook, Instagram, Mastodon, Truth Social, Tribel, Nost, and Post.

According to Al-Jazeera, Twitter stated that, "Accounts that are used for the main purpose of promoting content on another social platform may be suspended, but cross-posting content from other social media websites remains permissible."

In a tweet today, CEO Elon Musk said that, "Policy will be adjusted to suspending accounts only when that account's primary purpose is promotion of competitors, which essentially falls under the no spam rule."

Below is a detailed provision of platforms that will be prohibited from being promoted and examples of actions that would amount to a violation of this new policy.

However, users may be able to promote accounts from other social media platforms as a paid advertisement.

Despite this, the tweet announcing the new policy has since been deleted and taken down from its Help Center page after Twitter users criticised the change

Following the disputes rising from the sudden announcement, Musk tweeted an apology saying, "Going forward, there will be a vote for major policy changes. My apologies. Won’t happen again."

There are no further indications as to whether the policy will take effect.
