Oriental Kopi Scraps Plan For 5% Extra Service Charge During CNY Following Public Backlash

Oriental Kopi has cancelled its plan to increase its service charge from 10% to 15% during Chinese New Year (CNY), which was intended as a 'tip' for its employees working over the festive period

The popular coffee chain announced on its social media accounts last night, 22 January, that the planned hike of service charge by extra 5% on the first and second days of CNY will no longer take effect.

"We are very sorry for the inconvenience caused over the past few days. During this Chinese New Year, our service charges will remain unchanged, and no adjustments will be made," Oriental Kopi said.

This reversal comes after public backlash over the coffee chain's earlier notice in which it had announced the increased service fee

One of the people to question the hike was Tebrau member of parliament (MP) Jimmy Puah, who questioned whether such a practice by a restaurant is "reasonable and allowed under the law".

"A precedent that is quite worrisome. After this, all festivals may have a price increase," he said.

Following which, the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry reminded the public that customers could lodge a complaint if they discover a restaurant increasing its service charge during festive periods.

Meanwhile, the Malaysia Singapore Coffee Shop Proprietors' General Association has supported the move to raise service charge to 15%:
