A labour group has questioned the government's decision not to renew the contracts of 30,000 workers who do not possess a Malaysian Certificate of Education (SPM)

According to Utusan Malaysia, Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services of Malaysia (CUEPACS) president Datuk Dr Adnan Mat described the decision as unfair and burdensome, noting that some of these employees have been serving in the public sector for the past six years.

"CUEPACS urges the government to adopt a more compassionate and fair approach towards the fate of contract staff who have long served in the public sector.

"They have contributed to public service with dedication and should not be treated as temporary workers who can be dismissed at will," the New Straits Times quoted him as saying.

Adnan claimed the government failed to consider the affected employees' six years of work experience as a credential worthy of contract renewal under grade 1 of the Public Service Salary Scheme (SSPA), which is similar to what is offered for permanent positions.

The CUEPACS president also listed six issues faced by contract staff following the government's decision not to renew their contracts

The issues highlighted include contract staff losing their jobs without job security despite long-term service, confusion caused by changes in service contracts, emotional distress due to contract termination, and the struggle to find new employment after serving in the public sector for more than a decade.

"We have found individuals who have served as contract staff for over 15 years, now facing sudden job loss, making it difficult for them to find new employment," said Adnan.

He urged the government to negotiate with his party to find a fair solution that protects the welfare of contract employees in the public sector, reported Buletin TV3.
