Nintendo has long reigned supreme in the handheld gaming market, with iconic devices like the Gameboy, Nintendo DS, and the Switch capturing the hearts of gamers worldwide.

Despite attempts by various companies, including Sony in previous years, none have managed to truly dethrone Nintendo in the portable gaming arena. Could this new PlayStation handheld finally be the contender that breaks Nintendo's long-standing grip on the market?

A recent Bloomberg report has revealed that Sony is experimenting with a new PlayStation handheld gaming device

According to Bloomberg, this device is intended to be a direct competitor to the Nintendo Switch, allowing gamers to play PlayStation 5 games on the go, similar to how the Switch offers portable play.

However, it appears that this handheld console is still in its early stages of development and may be years away from release. There's even a possibility that Sony might ultimately decide not to launch it, especially with the anticipated arrival of the Nintendo Switch 2 and rumors of Microsoft exploring its own handheld gaming device. The handheld gaming market is becoming increasingly competitive, and it remains to be seen whether Sony's new device will make it to the hands of gamers.

Although Sony released the PlayStation Portal Remote Player in 2023, it doesn't directly compete with the Nintendo Switch due to its limitations

The Portal requires a constant Internet connection to stream games from a PlayStation 5 console, unlike the Switch, which offers seamless portable play without relying on Internet connectivity. This key difference makes the Switch a more versatile and convenient option for gamers on the go.
