A mesmerising emerald green river that had the potential to become Malaysia's new tourist spot has returned to its original condition after a few days of rain in Kelantan, leaving many netizens disappointed

Last weekend, Malaysians woke up to see a river in Kampung Kuala Hau, Machang, had turned emerald green, much like the pristine rivers one would see in Switzerland or northwestern China.

On TikTok, user @fhraslfikahmd_ shared two videos of the picturesque sight, with one of them garnering over 700,000 views.

"God's creation is truly beautiful. This is the view this morning (27 December).

"To those who say the video has filters or is edited, watch this TikTok video," said the Machang resident.

Local residents told reporters that the phenomenon of river water in Kampung Kuala Hau turning emerald green is not unusual, as it has been happening for the past three years during the rainy season

A 23-year-old villager, Wan Syafiq Wan Suhaimi, told Berita Harian that the area is a tributary that usually takes on that green hue after a heavy downpour.

"The water started turning emerald green last Saturday (23 December) and the villagers filmed the sight [and posted it on social media] until it went viral.

"Three years ago, this phenomenon did not go viral because it was considered normal for the local residents," he said.

It is understood that Kelantan environment department director Wan Aminordin Wan Kamaruddin has sent a team to the location to retrieve water samples to investigate the cause of the river water changing colour.

He said a chemical analysis report will be shared with the public soon.

As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end.

As of yesterday morning, 28 December, the river water at Kampung Kuala Hau has returned to its teh tarik hue.

In a Kelantan community group on Facebook, Lee Fong Yeen was among the eager Malaysians who rushed to the village to catch a glimpse of the breathtaking green waterway.

However, Lee was too late. He uploaded five photos of a sight that looked nothing like the promised serene sylvan river in viral videos.

"Next time, if you hear of a river turning emerald green, be sure to rush there immediately because it only lasts two days.

"The river has returned to the 'milk tea' hue that we are familiar with," said Lee on Facebook, amusing many netizens.

TikTok user @fhraslfikahmd_ also posted an update of the river yesterday, confirming that the river is no longer a stunning verdant sight.
