More than 9,000 contract doctors will be offered permanent positions in 2027, Prime Minister and Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced during his Budget 2027 speech today, 9 October
Anwar said the move would bring an end to the contract doctor issue, adding that doctors who complete their housemanship training will be offered permanent medical officer positions moving forward.
Since 2023, the government has permanently appointed more than 15,000 contract doctors, including 4,000 in 2026.
The latest announcement signals a further expansion of permanent appointments for doctors working in the public healthcare system.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health's (MOH) allocation will increase to RM47.7 billion under Budget 2027, up from RM46.5 billion previously
The additional funding comes alongside measures to strengthen staffing, improve access to treatment, upgrade healthcare facilities, and reduce waiting times for patients.
The government will also double the post-basic incentive allowance for nurses and paramedics from RM100 to RM200 a month.
Anwar said the increase was intended to recognise the responsibilities shouldered by 47,000 nurses and paramedics working on the ground.
The allowance increase is another measure aimed at supporting healthcare workers as the government expands its efforts to strengthen the public healthcare system.
