Many people realise the importance of keeping the bathroom at home a clean and inviting space, especially when hidden germs and bacteria are factored in

It is, after all, where we spend a considerable amount of time, from getting ready for the day to making sure we look our best.

The bathroom may even serve as a quiet respite from a hectic day. Just think back to all those times you accidentally spent too long using your phone on the loo. :P

However, in an effort to keep things spotless and germ-free, we may unknowingly do things that elicit the opposite effect of what we actually want to achieve.

So, here are three not-so-ideal bathroom habits you should ditch:

1. Mixing certain kinds of cleaning liquids together when it is time to clean

You've got your earphones in, gloves on, and are all set to deep clean your bathroom. But keep in mind, you should never mix bleach with other bathroom cleaning agents, such as strong acidic floor cleaners, as this can produce toxic fumes.

Instead, read labels carefully, and make sure you only use products as intended by its manufacturer.

And, while we love a good multipurpose cleaner, sometimes it's best to find a cleaning agent that does what it's intended to do, especially when it comes to keeping your bathroom clean and germ-free.

Things like dishwashing liquid or household detergent may work well to give a bright, shiny appearance in your bathroom, but bear in mind that these products do not contain bacteria-killing properties that your toilet so badly needs.

2. Leaving the toilet seat open when flushing

This one is an oldie but a goodie, and worth repeating no matter how many times you've heard it. Please, for the love of all things clean and germ-free, close the toilet seat before you flush, unless you want your toothbrush, skincare products, and everything else you keep in your bathroom to be covered in microscopic poop particles.

Shuddering at the thought? Welcome to gross things you need to know but wished you didn't.

3. Pouring bleach down your toilet tank

While you may use bleach to clean many other surfaces at home, it may not be such a good idea to use it in your toilet tank.

It could potentially ruin your tank, corroding the internal parts of your toilet. What about in the toilet bowl? In a pinch, bleach may work, however, its harsh properties might not protect your toilet bowl in the long run, as it may cause the porcelain to lose its shine.
