Mattel recently teased that the Hot Wheels Proton Saga Special Edition is coming to stores near you

In a post across its socials, Hot Wheels, which is part of Mattel, revealed that Malaysia's iconic national car, the 1985 Proton Saga, will be released as a special edition toy.

Naturally, the announcement not only piqued the interest of toy car enthusiasts but also many Malaysians.

The 1985 Proton Saga was the first national car ever made by Malaysian automaker Proton, making the Hot Wheels versions highly collectable.

But wait, wasn't Hot Wheels Proton Saga already released in 2023?

Turns out, there are two versions of the toy car: The Hot Wheels Proton Saga, which was released last year, and the Hot Wheels Proton Saga Special Edition, which will be released in 2024.

So what's the difference between both versions?

Both versions feature the same 1985 Proton Saga toy car model but in different packaging

And by packaging, we mean the blister cards.

The 2023 Hot Wheels Proton Saga came in a generic Hot Wheels packaging — the same type of packaging you'd find on other car models in Mattel's toy line.

The 2024 Hot Wheels Proton Saga Special Edition packaging, on the other hand, was designed by nine-year-old Saw Jane Harn

Saw had won the Hot Wheels x Proton Design Competition, which was held in conjunction with the Art of Speed Malaysia expo in 2023.

Her winning artwork, which features the Petronas Twin Towers, the National Monument, the Malayan tiger, the hornbill, and Malaysia's national flower, the hibiscus rosa-sinesis, will be part of the special edition's blister card design.

This also makes the Penangite the first kid in the world to see her hand-drawn artwork on a Hot Wheels diecast packaging.

All the more reason to get your hands on the Special Edition.

The 2024 Hot Wheels Proton Saga Special Edition is expected to be priced at RM9.90

The price of the special edition toy is expected to be similar to that of the 2023 version.

It's expected to be available at all toy stores nationwide in possibly limited quantities.

However, similar to the 2023 version, expect scalpers to buy and sell them at exorbitant prices on e-commerce platforms.
