Many travellers don't realise that having a passport that's still technically valid doesn't always mean you can travel.
Many countries require visitors to have at least six months' validity remaining on their passports from the date of entry or travel.
This means if your passport is expiring within the next six months, you could face issues at the airport or upon arrival at your destination, depending on the country's immigration requirements.
Why does your passport need six months' validity?
The six-month passport validity rule is a requirement imposed by many countries for foreign visitors entering their borders, including Malaysia.
It ensures travellers have a valid passport throughout their trip, especially in case of unexpected situations such as flight delays, emergencies, or needing to extend their stay.
Already booked your trip but your passport doesn't have six months' validity?
Don't worry, there are still steps you can take.
If you still have enough time before your departure date, you'll need to renew your passport online via the MyOnline Passport system.
Walk-in applications for Malaysian passport renewal are strictly reserved for specific groups:
– Senior citizens aged 60 and above
– Children under 13
– Persons with disabilities (OKU)
– Students travelling overseas
– Hajj pilgrims
– Those with lost or damaged passports
Eligible applicants can submit their applications at the Immigration Department or any Urban Transformation Centre (UTC).
For those with urgent travel plans, you may need to visit an Immigration office directly and explain your situation. Urgent cases may be considered, but approval remains subject to the Immigration Department's discretion.
