Lorry With Faulty Brakes On JB Highway Crashes Into 7 Vehicles And Kills 3 People

Seven vehicles stopped at a traffic light near the toll plaza when a lorry coming from the back crashed into them.

Three people recently lost their lives in a tragic accident along KM85.5 of the Johor Bahru-Ayer Hitam Expressway

The accident took place around 3.40pm on Monday, 28 December, near the Machap toll plaza.

Harian Metro reported that the deceased have been identified as married couple 55-year-old Wong Fook Onn and 52-year-old Chong Yoke Choo, along with another 55-year-old named Tan Sow Ngo.

Another eight victims of the accident sustained injuries while three others escaped uninjured.

The crash involved eight vehicles: a Hyundai Elantra, Proton Bezza, Volkswagen Tiguan, Perodua Alza, Naza Citra, and three lorries

Kluang district police chief ACP Low Hang Seng told The Star, "Based on initial investigations, all eight vehicles were heading towards Machap from Simpang Renggam."

"Seven of the vehicles then stopped at a traffic light near the toll plaza when a lorry coming from the back crashed into the vehicles in front of it," he added.

The lorry driver, a 27-year-old, has been arrested to assist in investigations and Low noted that the case has been classified under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Meanwhile, according to Utusan Malaysia, a witness at the scene said that the lorry had faulty breaks and the driver lost control of the vehicle at the junction.

Two victims were pronounced dead at the scene while the other died while receiving treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU)

Ayer Hitam Fire and Rescue operation commander Mohamad Shamin Mohamed Salikin explained to The Star that the remains have been handed over to the police for further action while injured victims were sent to the Kluang Hospital.
