Budget airline AirAsia is offering additional flights to Sabah and Sarawak, with fixed fares starting from RM199 and RM249 one-way for the upcoming Chinese New Year

In a statement yesterday, 28 December, the airline said the RM199 deal applies to those leaving from Kuala Lumpur or Johor Bahru to Kuching, Bintulu, Miri, or Sibu in Sarawak.

Meanwhile, the RM249 offer is for those leaving from Kuala Lumpur or Johor Bahru to Kota Kinabalu or Tawau in Sabah.

The 52 extra flights are available for the entire festive season, from 17 to 30 January, in addition to the 274 flights already operating weekly to the same destinations.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the government is pleased to see AirAsia bring down fares during the festive season, despite their operational constraints

"While they are unable to further increase flight frequencies due to the shortage of aircraft which is affecting all airlines, we applaud their hard work to add special extra flights at fixed low fares to reconnect families," he said when officiating the promotion's launch at AirAsia's RedQ head office.

According to The Vibes, the deals in conjunction with the Chinese New Year was also hailed by Loke as a "very personal initiative" as it was part of his election manifesto.

He also encouraged other airlines to emulate the same or introduce other initiatives that could reduce airfares during other important festive seasons.

Bookings for AirAsia's fixed-rate flights to East Malaysia are available for booking from 28 December onwards

The airline has advised guests travelling during the Chinese New Year period to arrive at the airport two hours ahead of their scheduled departure time to avoid congestion.

Travellers are also encouraged to check-in earlier on the AirAsia Super App, as early as 14 days before their departure date, and use the e-boarding passes available to board their flights.
