Apandi Ali Has Now Declined His UMNO Supreme Council Post After "Seeking Divine Guidance"
This comes after he described accepting the UMNO post as a "homecoming."
Just hours after former attorney general Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali was appointed as a member of the UMNO supreme council by party president Datuk Seri Zahid Hamidi, he has now declined the post
"After thinking about this thoroughly and deeply, I think it is unreasonable for me to accept the appointment as an Umno Supreme Council member," said Apandi.
"What is playing in my mind is that my appointment will be mired by all sorts of negative perception that will be linked to whatever move and decision I made while I was a judge and the attorney general," he added, according to Malay Mail.
Apandi denied that he was pressured into declining the post and explained that his decision was inspired by God
"It is strictly my decision after seeking divine guidance... (through performing) Solat Istikarah (a Islamic prayer to seek guidance from Allah)," he said, New Straits Times reported.
The U-turn comes after Apandi described accepting the UMNO post as a "homecoming" yesterday
He told New Straits Times that the appointment must be seen as him exercising his fundamental right to association after leaving the civil service.
