CHAGEE Apologises After Employee Caught On Video Allegedly Sorting Lucky Draw Cups
The employee was allegedly sorting out cups with prizes and then keeping them in the back of the outlet.
CHAGEE Malaysia has apologised for an employee's action involving alleged rigging during a recent lucky draw contest
In a statement released today, 19 November, the popular milk tea chain from Yunnan, China, expressed regret after a 47-second video went viral, showing an employee sorting out cups allegedly with prizes to the side.
The video led many netizens to believe that the lucky draw contest was rigged because the employee appeared to be cheekily sticking out her tongue while shaking and inspecting each cup.
A separate video shows the same employee transferring several cups, believed to contain prizes, to the back of the store.
The videos can be found below:
The lucky draw contest, named the Tear & Win event, was held from 16 to 17 November to celebrate the brand's 7th anniversary
To participate, customers had to purchase selected drinks to stand a chance of winning luxury prizes such as Gucci and Louis Vuitton handbags, Apple products, and lipsticks, among others.
Customers had to tear open the bottom segment of the cup to reveal the lucky draw result.
After the videos went viral on TikTok, CHAGEE Malaysia contacted the original poster to apologise for the inconvenience caused
The company explained to the original poster that the employee in the videos was merely following instructions but acknowledged that the task should not have been conducted in public.
It also requested the original poster to remove the videos to protect the employee's privacy and well-being.
Separately on X, CHAGEE Malaysia urged netizens who had reuploaded the video to delete it, warning of possible legal action if they fail to comply.
This stern approach backfired on the brand, as many netizens were outraged by the threat of legal action and expressed disbelief over the company's handling of the situation, prompting calls for a boycott.
In today's apology statement, CHAGEE Malaysia said it is conducting an internal investigation to understand the situation
The beverage chain said that if the employee is found to have committed any misconduct, it will "take appropriate action in line with our values".
"The behaviour depicted does not reflect the standards we hold ourselves to, and we deeply regret any negative experience this may have created," it said.
The company promised to improve the mechanism of the next lucky draw contest by replacing physical gifts with QR codes in the cups.
