Commuters in Klang Valley will enjoy free KTM rides on 24 and 25 January in conjunction with Thaipusam, which falls on 25 January

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) will start the initiative at the stroke of midnight on 24 January and end it at 11.59pm the next day.

"This is the first time we're providing free rides for KTM users in the Klang Valley in conjunction with Thaipusam," he said, as quoted by the New Straits Times.

"However, commuters still need to scan (when checking in and out) at the automated control gates at the stations during this period," he added.

Loke said the KTM train operating hours will also be extended, with 28 stations offering 24-hour service from 23 to 26 January, as the ministry is expecting some 250,000 passengers to use the train services during the long weekend.

There will be additional KTM trains heading to and from Batu Caves, where worshippers and tourists will gather for Thaipusam

"The additional commuter services will start at 9.55pm on 23 January from Pulau Sebang to Batu Caves, with a one-hour train frequency.

"The extra commuter services from Port Klang to Batu Caves will begin at 11.39pm [on 23 January], also with a one-hour train frequency," he said.

There will also be additional interstate electric train service (ETS) trips between Butterworth, Penang, and KL Sentral stations on 24 and 25 January, as well as between Padang Besar, Perlis, and KL Sentral from 26 to 28 January.

He said ticket sales for these additional ETS trains would open at noon today, 15 January.

Besides that, Loke announced that there will also be free Rapid KL bus services available in Kuala Lumpur and Penang on 24 and 25 January

"There are three bus services in Kuala Lumpur and five in Penang that will pass through areas where Thaipusam celebrations will take place," he said.

In Kuala Lumpur, the free Rapid KL services in Kuala Lumpur are for buses services heading to Batu Caves from the Pasir Seni LRT station, Gombak LRT station, and Kampung Baru MRT station.
