GSC To Consolidate Selected Locations & Launch A New Outlet In KL East Mall

Golden Screen Cinema (GSC) Sdn Bhd announced plans to increase its market share in key locations and consolidate selected sites for greater operational efficiency
In a statement to SAYS yesterday, 13 May, GSC said it will launch a new outlet at KL East on 20 May and
consolidate GSC Central Square Sungai Petani by early June.
"This integration enables a strategic redeployment to GSC Amanjaya Mall, which is within a 7km radius of the area.
"GSC's commitment to innovation shines through its latest venture, GSC KL East Mall, strategically positioned in North KL. With eight halls, including an IMAX hall and the third PlayPark in Malaysia, it caters to diverse audiences, particularly families and youth keen on action and animation," it said.
GSC chief executive officer Koh Mei Lee said the cinema operator is committed to elevating the moviegoer's experience through entertainment excellence
"At GSC, we are dedicated to delivering unforgettable experiences that go beyond conventional norms.
"Through embracing technological advancements and fostering a culture of innovation, we ensure that every visit to our cinemas is an unparalleled journey tailored to the evolving preferences of our moviegoers," said Koh.
The statement also mentioned that GSC is crafting future-ready entertainment experiences, exemplified by the recent launch of Aurum Theatre at The Exchange TRX and Velvet Cinemas by GSC at 163 Mont Kiara.
Both specialty outlets reflect GSC's commitment to delivering innovative entertainment options for its customers.
In an interview with the Business Times, the finance section of the New Straits Times, in late March, Koh said that some GSC outlets will close as part of its strategic consolidation
She said the plan was prompted by the saturation of malls, particularly in the Klang Valley.
"This resulted in closing older cinemas in malls with less footfall and prioritising the newer cinema locations nearby, such as GSC LaLaport BBCC, which is within the vicinity of the now-closed GSC Berjaya Times Square.
"It will also enable our on-ground crews to focus on strategic locations with higher footfall and population density," said Koh.
With the increasing popularity of streaming platforms, Koh pointed out that both streaming services and cinemas can coexist, each catering to distinct audience preferences.
While streaming services deliver entertainment at home, movies shown in theatres provide immersive experiences, she said.
However, the CEO acknowledged that the industry faces additional challenges, including the Hollywood writers' strike in 2023, which led to production halts and the postponement of major Hollywood blockbusters.
Koh said the strike has short- to medium-term effects.
"As such, the lack of fresh and quality content from Hollywood has affected overall admissions," she said.
To address these challenges, Koh mentioned that GSC will focus on enhancing regional and local movie selections, aligning with its commitment to bolstering the local movie landscape.
