Malaysians will be able to apply for a new international passport with an option of up to 10 years' validity starting 1 July 2026, as the government begins rolling out the updated document nationwide

The new passport was officially launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim earlier today, 30 June, and will be introduced in phases across 71 passport offices.

Under the new structure, applicants aged 18 and above can choose between a five-year passport or a 10-year validity option, depending on their travel needs.

For the 10-year option, the fee is set at RM350.

According to Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, Malaysians will save RM50 compared to renewing a five-year passport twice over the same period.

A major upgrade comes in the form of security enhancements

The new passport now features 94 security characteristics, up from 49 previously.

These include holograms, ultraviolet (UV) printing, latent images, and other embedded anti-counterfeiting elements aimed at reducing forgery and tampering risks.

Authorities say the updated passport is designed to improve convenience for frequent travellers, including workers, students, and families who travel regularly.

Existing passports will remain valid until their expiry dates, and there is no requirement for immediate replacement.
