Malaysians who wear prescription glasses can now join the Malaysian Army (TDM) after relaxing its recruitment requirements

According to Bernama, Army chief General Datuk Azhan Md Othman said the updated recruitment criteria do not compromise on quality, but instead adapt to value specific technical skills and capabilities.

Here are the changes made to the recruitment requirements:
• Raising the maximum age of recruits from 27 to 30
• Reducing the minimum height of recruits from 162cm to 157cm
• Raising the the Body Mass Index (BMI) limit from 26.9 to 28

"These changes have already been implemented to expand opportunities for qualified and capable Malaysians to join the Army.

"Each candidate will undergo a rigorous assessment and training process to ensure that only those who truly meet the TDM standards are accepted into the service.

"TDM's main focus is not only on increasing the number of personnel, but also on improving the quality, expertise, and balance of its human resource structure to ensure that every Corps and Regiment remains at an optimal level of readiness," said Azhan.

Before the recruitment requirements were relaxed, a TDM document stated that recruits had to undergo various physical tests, including eye, ear, and dental examinations.

With only about 3,000 out of 10,000 annual applicants currently meeting the requirements after initial screenings and health checks, Azhan said the new requirements will result in more recruits

He revealed that 1,236 young recruits had successfully completed training in the current intake.

Azhan added that TDM is also committed to strengthening women's participation in the service in line with the organisational needs and future capability development.

He said several suitable areas have been identified to expand women's involvement, including developing expertise to support operational effectiveness and organisational readiness.

"TDM will open the recruitment of young female soldiers for entry this July with an estimated recruitment of 350 people. This recruitment is being carried out in a planned manner to meet the current and future needs of the Army," Azhan said.

Meanwhile, he said TDM fully supports the implementation of a holistic action plan through the establishment of an Anti-Bullying Task Force by the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) to tackle bullying within the force.
