M'sian Cosplayer Discovers Her Photos Are Being Edited Into Nudes With AI & Sold Online
She has since reported the name of the account holder to the police.
A Malaysian cosplayer has lodged a police report after discovering explicit images of herself being sold online, allegedly edited using artificial intelligence
In a post on X, local cosplayer @elyanasparks shared her shock upon learning that her cosplay photos were being edited inappropriately without her consent, and sold for RM2 per image, or RM18 for an album, on Tumblr.
She was able to identify the perpetrator by posing as a customer and obtaining his full name and banking QR code.
While the case has been reported to the police, she wanted to highlight that being a cosplayer โ which sometimes involves wearing revealing outfits โ does not give anyone the right to misuse her content
She also emphasised that clothing was not the issue, as the perpetrator had edited not only her photos but also those of fully-clothed Muslim women and even minors.
"Yes, I'm aware that I'm a cosplayer, and this (being sexualised) is something we face regularly. However, it is WRONG IN THE LAW to sell naked photos," she wrote in response to accusations that she creates suggestive content.
"I really hate being accused of selling such photos. I'm just a cosplayer who enjoys expressing herself, and I'm strongly against creating NSFW (not safe for work) content. I have my limits," she added.
Petaling Jaya district police chief ACP Shahrulnizam Ja'afar has confirmed receiving the report
In a stateme๏ปฟnt issued yesterday, 23 January, Shahrulnizam said the investigation is underway under Section 292 of the Penal Code.
He also told The Star that the case has been referred to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) for further investigation.
