Putrajaya Removes All Political Appointees In GLCs

A directive sighted by SAYS states that the Cabinet has decided to end the tenures of chairpersons and board members made through political appointments in federal statutory bodies and government-linked firms with immediate effect.

The government has terminated the contracts of all chairpersons and board members made through political appointments in government-linked firms and federal statutory bodies, a directive stated

The directive, signed by Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali, was issued to the secretaries-general of all ministries. The circular was sighted by SAYS today, 15 December.

According to the directive, the decision was taken during a Cabinet meeting yesterday, 14 December.

It affects federal statutory bodies, Minister of Finance (Incorporated) companies, government-linked companies (GLCs), government-linked investment companies (GLICs), and key institutions.

The decision was taken after a lengthy Cabinet discussion

The Star, while citing sources, reported that during the lengthy discussion with ministers yesterday, it was acknowledged that there were some political appointees who were competent and could perform. Ultimately, it was decided that a blanket decision would be made to end political appointments.

Meanwhile, Malaysiakini reported a minister as confirming the Cabinet decision.

It was also reported that there was an increase in political appointments during former prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob's tenure which lasted for less than 14 months.

A total of 234 political appointments were made from August 2021 to September 2022. Among them, 119 were new entries, while 115 had been carried over from prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin's tenure.
