Resident Who Displayed Jalur Gemilang In S'pore Could Be Fined RM1,680 Or Jailed 6 Months

A viral TikTok video showing the Jalur Gemilang being displayed alongside a Singapore flag at an HDB flat in Singapore has brought attention to the country's ban on displaying foreign flags
The six-second video was uploaded by The SG Daily over the weekend, with the caption, "Malaysia boleh."
The video received over 117,000 views and 700 comments, with several netizens calling for the authorities to take action against the resident for displaying the national flag of Malaysia in Singapore.
"Town Council, please take action," a TikTok user wrote, while another added, "Authorities, please take action."
Publicly displaying any foreign flag or national emblem is an offence under Singapore's Foreign National Emblems (Control of Display) Act 1949.
Individuals convicted under the law can face a fine of up to SGD500 (about RM1,680), imprisonment for up to six months, or both.
Meanwhile, some netizens defended the resident, explaining that the flags were displayed side by side because Malaysia and Singapore are celebrating their respective National Days in August
"[It's] because Malaysia's national day also [falls] this month," explained one person.
"No worries, Singapore and Malaysia [are] good brothers," said a netizen.
One TikTok user added, "Ok la, nice. [We are] friends forever."
