S'porean Man Installs 9 Air-Conds In His Flat & Receives 'Frosty' Response From Neighbours
Huang told reporters that he wanted to live in comfort after being diagnosed with terminal liver cancer.
A Singaporean retiree, identified as Huang, installed nine air conditioning units in his rented four-room flat in Sengkang, Singapore
Huang reportedly installed five air-conditioning units in his flat's living room, two more in the master bedroom, and one unit each in the two remaining rooms.
Huang would also allegedly set the temperature of all the air-conditioners to 18°C and the apartment would be so cold that neighbours would report feeling the chill air from outside his unit.
Shin Min Daily News reporters also mentioned that when visiting Huang at his home, Huang attended to them while wearing six to seven layers of clothing.
According to Huang, he told reporters that he paid SGD10,300 (RM32,900) a month for the nine units he used.
He also allegedly paid SGD13,000 (RM41,533) to install all nine of the units when he first moved in.
The 64-year-old told Shin Min Daily News that he was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2021. He reasoned that due to his condition, he wanted to live in comfort as he believed it could strengthen his body's immunity and improve his health.
Due to Huang's excessive use of air-conditioners, his neighbours began to complain and air out their grievances and issues that he was causing them
One of Huang's neighbours, Liu, who lived directly above him, complained of the condensation (water that forms on a cold surface when humid air is in contact with it) he had to deal with because of Huang's chilly apartment.
Liu mentioned that it was a headache and a safety hazard for him to mop his floor thrice daily in order to soak up all the moisture that would form on his apartment floor.
He also complained that his apartment walls and ceiling had begun to grow mould due to the moisture leaked from the air-conditioners. Liu allegedly spent SGD500 (RM1,597) to repaint his apartment walls to tackle the mould issue.
"It gave me a headache," the neighbour told Shin Min Daily News reporters.
Having dealt with issues like these for two months, Huang's neighbours decided to confront Huang and make a formal complaint to authorities
On 21 August, Liu visited Huang, hoping that they could discuss the matter at hand and reach some form of compromise.
All parties reportedly came to a consensus that Huang would reduce the amount of time he spent using his air-conditioners. He also allegedly agreed to use only two air-conditioners in his master bedroom when he goes to bed at night.
However, due to the number of complaints Huang received, he moved out of the apartment building on 17 September
He told reporters that he was not happy with his life at the apartment block, so he chose to move out. He left behind all nine of his air-conditioning units in the apartment.
"My neighbours ganged up against me. They also went to the authorities and the press," Huang told reporters.
Neighbours expressed their concern about the air-conditioners remaining in Huang's unit. They were worried that the next tenant would use them and cause the same issues.
However, Huang told Shin Min Daily News reporters that he would return to get his air-conditioners back after moving into his new home.
