A 17-year-old girl in Johor Bahru jumped out of a moving car near the Perling toll plaza after the male e-hailing driver changed his route

According to a viral social media post, the incident happened at around 5pm on 11 August.

The post alleged that the Grab driver tried to kidnap the girl by disabling his location tracking and switching his Grab application to offline mode, while also taking a different route.

Terrified, the girl was forced to jump out of the moving vehicle.

The post urged other girls to share their live location with family or friends for safety.

Both the e-hailing driver and the passenger subsequently lodged police reports

North Johor Bahru district police chief ACP MS Balveer Singh confirmed the incident but said that an investigation revealed no criminal intent, reported the New Straits Times.

He explained that the situation was a misunderstanding.

"Due to road maintenance, the driver had to deviate from the original route and head towards Taman Perling to make a U-turn on Jalan Persisiran Perling.

"When the passenger noticed the route change, she jumped out of the moving car," he said.

According to the police, the driver immediately stopped to help, but bystanders had already taken the passenger to the hospital

The passenger suffered minor injuries, and the driver reported the incident to Grab.

Balveer advised e-hailing drivers to improve communication with passengers regarding route changes.

"We also advise the public to always be vigilant but to avoid acting hastily as this can pose risks to yourself and others.

"If a suspicious or unexpected situation occurs, it is recommended to communicate with the driver or the party involved to get an explanation.

"If you still feel unsafe, contact the police immediately," he said.
