National bowler Sin Li Jane has made history by becoming the first Malaysian to win the US Women's Open on Tuesday, 18 June

According to Bernama, the 32-year-old performed brilliantly at the Royal Pin Woodland bowling centre in Indianapolis, Indiana, defeating Latvia's second seed Dania Zavjalova 226-214 in the final.

The win also makes Sin only the second Asian champion in the tournament's history since its inception in 1949.

Winning the iconic eagle trophy and coveted green championship jacket, Sin took home a cash prize of USD60,000 (approximately RM280,000).

Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh congratulated Sin on social media for the historic win

The minister also noted that Sin is the first Southeast Asian to win the title.

The New Straits Times reported that Sin's victory also surpasses Datuk Shalin Zulkifli's third-place finish in 2008, establishing her as a significant figure in Malaysian bowling.

The win marked Sin's first major title and her third Professional Women's Bowling Association Tour (PWBA) title of the season

According to the United States Bowling Congress, Sin's feat is remarkable considering that she has been absent from the tour for three seasons before the start of the 2024 season.

"I feel very happy, I wanted to make sure that I would get the win tonight.

"I've dreamt about this moment for a long time, and after watching other bowlers win it while being away, today, I won it," a jubilant Sin told the US sports association.

She is now the frontrunner for the PWBA Player of the Year award, which would make her the first international player to win the award, if she continues to lead the tour in wins and points.
