SEGA is taking a nostalgic approach to simplify communication with its new device, the emojam

This quirky, emoji-only pager aims to cut through the noise of social media, offering a fun and thoughtful alternative to endless notifications and updates.

While social media has certainly made it easier for us to connect, SEGA notes that it can also lead to stress as people feel overwhelmed by constant alerts and messages.

Unlike the pagers of the '80s, the emojam doesn't support numbers or text. Instead, it allows users to communicate solely through emojis

According to the Malay Mail, there are over 1,100 emojis to choose from, with a limit of 10 per message.

The catch? Messages must be short, and there’s no room for typing.

SEGA believes this constraint encourages users to put real thought into crafting their messages, translating feelings into tiny images for friends to interpret.

The company suggests this added thoughtfulness through emojis could strengthen bonds, especially among kids, by encouraging them to consider each other's perspectives

Connected via Wi-Fi, the emojam allows group chats with up to five people and has a friend list cap of 100, promoting communication within a small, manageable circle.

Adding friends also requires meeting in person and tapping devices together, keeping the emphasis on real-world connections and limiting the potential for online harassment.

Although targeted at children, emojam could easily appeal to anyone feeling the overload of traditional social media.

With a release date of December 10, the emojam is available for pre-order on Amazon Japan, priced at 7,150 yen (about RM205). Whether it's a short-lived fad or a gentle nudge towards simpler interactions, emojam invites us to reconnect without the clutter.
