It's no surprise that Malaysia's rich culture attracts many video game developers to either reference or prominently feature the country in their games

From triple-A console titles to popular indie games, Malaysia has captured the attention of developers for various reasons. Whether it be the rich culture or delectable cuisine, Malaysia offers endless inspiration for developers to incorporate into their video games.

Here are some video games featuring Malaysia:

1. Uncharted 4: A Thief's End

In Naughty Dog's epic action-adventure title, protagonist Nathan Drake conducts some research for his upcoming plans. His investigation involves examining a map that looks familiar.

Upon closer inspection, the map reveals a portion of Melaka.

This is followed by the third chapter of the game, titled The Malaysia Job, in which Drake is offered a salvage operation in Malaysia.

2. Hitman 2: Silent Assassin

In this espionage title, protagonist Agent 47 is tasked with infiltrating the PETRONAS Twin Towers to assassinate a highly skilled hacker and kleptology expert named Charlie Sidjan.

The three-part mission requires players to sneak around the Twin Towers to achieve their objectives. However, it's important to note that the map is simply inspired by the Twin Towers and is not an exact replica of the iconic landmark.

3. Burnout Dominator

This 2007 arcade racer showcases the bustling streets of Kuala Lumpur's city centre.

The game accurately recreates Kuala Lumpur's key areas, including KL Sentral and Petaling Street, which are renamed ST Central and Chinatown, respectively.

The iconic PETRONAS Twin Towers are also featured in the backdrop, albeit under the name Spiritual Towers. To add a touch of local flavour, the game's traffic includes the king of the road, the beloved Perodua Myvi and Perodua Kenari, which players can navigate around or collide with.

4. Final Fantasy XV

In Square Enix's fifteenth mainline title, players can experience the typical mamak-style food commonly found in Malaysia.

Players can visit the in-game city of Lestallum to enjoy a plate of roti canai or satay, as well as cups of teh tarik.

This was made possible by Malaysian developer Wan Hazmer Wan Abd Halim, who served as the lead designer of the triple-A title.

5. Just Cause 2

Perhaps the most tongue-in-cheek entry on the list, Just Cause 2 is set in a location that bears an uncanny resemblance to Malaysia.

Some characters in the game even mutter Malay phrases such as "selamat jalan" and "sahabat handai".

Also, some of the locations in the game are straight-up hilarious. For example, there are places known as Ramai Rakyat Islands, Berawan Besar Hill, Lautan Lama Desert, West Tanah Raya, Gunung Gila Pangkat, and more. In fact, the archipelago is known as Panau, which is Malay for a type of skin infection.

There's also a gaudy, over-the-top rendition of the PETRONAS Twin Towers featured in the game.
