A 26-year-old man has pleaded not guilty at the Johor Bahru Sessions Court on Monday, 10 February, to a charge of mischief by fire after allegedly setting his wife's car ablaze during a marital dispute

According to the New Straits Times, Chai Kaw Fung entered his plea after the charge was read before Judge Thalha Bachok @ Embok Mok.

He is accused of setting fire to his 21-year-old wife's Toyota Vios along Jalan Tebrau at 10.20pm on 2 February, while she and three other women were inside the car.

The charge, under Section 435 of the Penal Code, carries a maximum jail sentence of 14 years and a fine if convicted.

Deputy public prosecutor Siti Fatimah Mamu asked the court to set bail at RM20,000, and to order the accused to report to the police monthly, surrender his passport, and refrain from contacting the prosecution witnesses

However, Chai's lawyer, Goh Sze Han, appealed for a lower bail, citing Chai's RM3,000 monthly income as a car accessories shop employee and his responsibilities for his two-year-old child and elderly parents. He also requested that Chai be allowed to retain his passport for work-related travel to Singapore.

The court set bail at RM8,000, requiring Chai to report to the police monthly and surrender his passport.

The case is scheduled for mention on 11 March.
