If you've been scrolling through Instagram lately, you've probably done a double take. Mixed in with your friends' updates and targeted ads are… random baby selfies.
There's no product. No promo code. No explanation. Just a blurry, front-facing photo of a toddler staring directly into your soul.
Brands like AirAsia, Shopee, Bila Bila Mart, GSC, TGV Cinemas, FamilyMart, Dutch Lady, CIMB, Haidilao, JD Sports, and ZUS Coffee have all joined the trend, leaving followers wondering if their social media managers had accidentally handed the company phone to a toddler.
But as it turns out, there's actually a story behind it. It all started with what appeared to be an accidental upload.
According to Khaleej Times, a Saudi Arabian fashion brand called Sahaba Abaya accidentally uploaded a selfie taken by the owner's child, along with a caption made up of random keyboard mashing.
Instead of panicking and hitting delete, the brand just rolled with it and left the post up.
What looked like a simple mistake quickly caught people's attention. Followers found it unexpectedly funny and wholesome, and the post began making the rounds online.
Soon enough, other brands in Saudi Arabia started staging their own "toddler takeovers".
By posting similar selfies with zero context, they left people confused, curious, and eager to figure out what was going on.
Like many viral social media trends, it didn't take long for this one to make its way to Malaysia
Over the last few days, several local brands have been dropping their own versions of the baby selfie, fully committing to the bit by refusing to explain themselves in the captions.
The posts don't advertise a new product or promote an ongoing sale. Instead, they simply rely on people's curiosity, encouraging users to stop scrolling, check the comments, and share the posts with friends asking, "Why is every brand suddenly posting babies?"
Sometimes, the mystery itself is the best marketing.
