Earlier in March, AirAsia X (AAX) launched its inaugural direct flight to Almaty, Kazakhstan

The milestone marked AAX as the first Southeast Asian airline to establish a direct air link to Almaty, Kazakhstan's vibrant commercial and cultural epicentre.

Almaty is known for its natural beauty, breathtaking views, love of equestrianism, and balance between rustic tradition and modernity.

Here's a detailed itinerary for your next holiday:

Day 1: Tour the city

Kok Tobe Park

Our first stop was Kok Tobe Park. Spacious and clean, it also has amusement park attractions and restaurants.

It's a must to take the cable cars up to the top of the hill for the views and attractions. You can easily spend the whole day here.

At the top of the hill, there's a 371.5-metre TV tower. It's known now as the Almaty Tower and is the tallest free-standing tubular steel structure in the world. The tip of the tower would make it 1,452 metres above sea level. However, access to the tower is restricted to tourists so you can only view it from the side.

Ascension Cathedral

The Ascension Cathedral, also known as Zenkov Cathedral, is a Russian Orthodox cathedral located in Panfilov Park.

Completed in 1907, this cathedral is an architectural feat that is made entirely out of wood without the use of nails. Standing at 56 metres tall, it is the second tallest wooden church in the world.

Republic Square & the Monument of Independence

Republic Square is the largest square in Almaty and used for public events, ranging from national festivities and parades, to official events and sports meets.

Around the square are the Mayor's office, administrative buildings, residential homes, the state museum, and the Almaty Trade Center.

The main attraction of the Republic Square is the Monument of Independence, which is a symbol of modern Kazakhstan.

Dine at Etnocafe Zhailau

Zhailau is an Ethno-café restaurant complex that offers delicious Kazakh dishes.

Must-haves include baked beef with potatoes, eggplant with vegetables, cheburek with meat, slices of chicken roll, and Almaty pilaf rice. If you're feeling really adventurous, try the Kazakh national drink Kumys, made from fermented mare's milk.

While you get a taste of delicious Kazakh and Oriental cuisines, you can enjoy traditional folk music performed with the Dombra, the country's national instrument.

Day 2: Get closer to nature

'The Huns' Ethno-village

For an authentic cultural experience, visit 'The Huns' Ethno-village. There, you'll be greeted by the nomadic Huns group of Kazakhstan, along the Talgar gorge.

Experience daily life for the locals as they share unique traditions, ceremonies, and cultural activities.

You can also watch a horse-riding tricks show, witness a warrior battle, ride the horses, and try your hand at archery and crafting.

Your day culminates with an outdoor lunch and beautiful mountain views.

Shymbulak Mountain Resort

Shymbulak is a ski resort near Almaty and happens to also be the largest ski resort in Central Asia.

It is located in the upper part of the Medeu Valley in the Zailiisky Alatau mountain range, at an elevation of 2,200 metres above sea level.

With stunning mountainous views, you can ski and snowboard, or just sit back and enjoy the resort's facilities.

Day 3: Shop at the bazaar

Green Bazaar

The Green Bazaar is a huge marketplace where you can find almost everything you need. Bright and clean, there are plenty of stalls to visit and is a foodie's dream come true.

While they do sell fresh produce and meats, there are also clothing stalls, pharmacies, snacks counters, and is a great place to stock up on nuts, candies, and preserved fruits to bring home.

In the upper areas are restaurants and other shops to explore.

Rakhat Chocolate Shop

Be sure to stop by the Rakhat for chocolates, sweets, cookies, wafers and more delicious treats.

They make great gifts to bring home, or just to treat yourself, hehe!
