[VIDEO] What Makes Us Malaysian? We Hit The Streets Of KL To Find Out
Embrace our differences and cherish our similarities. <3
From the food we eat to the languages we speak, right down to the zaman sekolah games we play, there are many things that bond Malaysians as one
Even the pickiest eater will smile at a good ol' simple plate of nasi lemak. And forming friendships? It comes naturally, even when we don't fully speak the same language. <3
Not to mention, our childhood games like lat tali lat that can evolve from school recess pastime to decision maker for where to eat come lunchtime at work.
It's safe to say, we do things with a flair that makes us uniquely Malaysian.
With this in mind, and in partnership with TikTok, we hit the streets of KL to talk to people and discover other iconic Malaysian 'styles.'
Watch the full video below to find out what went down:
Whether it is lat tali lat or one, two, jus, it's clear that our instinct for childhood games is still intact — at this point it has become like muscle memory, heheh!
Suresh: "Lat tali lat tali tam plom."
Suresh: "Mak Minah balik kampung."
Suresh: "One, two, jus! One, two, jus!"
Awww, remember Pepsi Cola and the 'break finger' game, anyone? Fun timesss!
Suresh: "Pepsi Cola, one..."
But, of course, the beauty of Malaysian culture is that it's made up of different parts that go beyond childhood games
Guy in red: "I think for us like, being Malaysian... Everyone experiences each other's culture, we're very accepting. We always have this neighbourly instinct to talk with each other, even though we may not know the person."
In typical Malaysian style, the topic of food always seems to arise — it is after all the way we show love, kan? <3
Girl: "Our major, major problem — makan apa hari ni (where to eat today)?"
Girl two: "I think it's... You always ask people like, wei, makan mana?"
Group of girls: "Nak makan mana?"
And then there are the many languages we speak, mix, and adapt into our own
Guy: "Bahasa. Yeah, rojak, bahasa rojak. Yeah, betul. Kadang-kadang, the other race, dia akan campur dengan English. Ataupun, dia akan ada slang, slang macam okay lah."
An example within an example, hehe.
The number of languages we're fluent in can even blow people's minds when we tell them
Guy: "English, Punjabi, Hindi, Chinese, Japanese, a biit of... definitely Malay, not a bit of Malay. Definitely Malay, and a bit of Tamil."
Suresh: "Eh, bro, you hold this mic. You take over."
