As speculation continues over the cause of the crash that killed six members of a family in Kedah on 7 June, the national vehicle inspection agency has stressed that it will not determine the cause of the accident
The Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centre (PUSPAKOM) said it is currently inspecting the Proton X50 SUV involved in the collision, including key components such as the braking system, but stressed that its role is limited to assessing the vehicle's condition.
According to the agency, the inspection began earlier this week, and a comprehensive report is expected to be submitted to the police later today, 11 June, reported the New Straits Times.
"At this stage, we are assisting the police in their accident investigation. PUSPAKOM's focus is on the condition of key components such as the braking system," it said.
"It must be stressed that PUSPAKOM only inspects the vehicle involved and will not determine the cause of the accident."
The agency said its findings will be handed over to police, who are conducting the wider investigation into the crash involving the SUV and a lorry.
The clarification comes after the tragedy sparked widespread speculation on social media
Some of the claims included that the lorry driver was intoxicated and that the SUV involved was newly purchased and defective.
Police later confirmed that the lorry driver's urine screening test returned negative, although he had seven prior traffic summonses.
Kedah police chief Datuk Adzli Abu Shah has urged the public to allow investigators to complete their work and establish the facts surrounding the fatal collision.
He had earlier clarified that the SUV was driven by 21-year-old Ahmad Fahim Ahmad Shukri, not his older brother Ahmad Syafiq Ahmad Shukri, a police officer.
The crash occurred at about 3.50pm on Sunday and claimed the lives of six of the seven family members in the SUV.
Another victim, a 3-year-old girl, survived with serious facial injuries.
