A well-loved Subang resident who dedicated his retirement years to helping others now needs help to raise funds for an urgent heart bypass

According to Subang Jaya community news platform SJ Echo, the resident, Mohamad Noor Ahmad, has served the neighbourhood of PJS 9 for over 20 years.

While the 75-year-old is the neighbourhood's Rukun Tetangga deputy chairman, residents choose to affectionately call him 'Penghulu' (village head) instead.

From organising community events to handling safety and security matters in the neighbourhood, and even catching snakes, he has always lent a hand to those who need it.

Now, the community is striving to pay Mohamad Noor back by starting a fundraiser for his second heart bypass surgery

The senior citizen urgently needs to undergo the surgery to repair the failing mitral and tricuspid valves in his heart. He has occasional trouble breathing and is starting to feel weaker by the day.

SJ Echo explains that while he can undergo the surgery at a government hospital for a minimal fee, the neighbourhood is worried that waiting would further put his health at risk.

The crowdfunding aims to send him to a private medical facility for a heart bypass surgery that will cost RM150,000.

Although Mohamad Noor was initially hesitant to agree to the crowdfunding initiative for his surgery, he eventually relented to the idea. Most of his savings were already spent on his first bypass in 2004.

The fundraiser was launched by Subang Jaya assemblywoman Michelle Ng and the Lions Club of Subang Jaya

"This is the first case I've dealt with where a person whose life is on the line has declined help. This is typical of Mohamad Noor, better known as Penghulu," said Ng, as quoted by SJ Echo.

"We had to insist and pretty much refuse him a choice in the matter. It is now time for the community to take care of him and his family. For once, now is their time to receive."

"Penghulu takes care of PJS 9. He is and has been doing a stellar job for many, many years. Even whilst coping with his medical condition, I see him still helping residents to report issues to Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) in our 'Clean and Clear' WhatsApp group," she said.
