Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has made it clear that fugitive financier Low Taek Jho, better known as Jho Low, must not be granted a pardon and should instead face the Malaysian legal system
The Lembah Pantai member of parliament noted that while the Cabinet has yet to formally deliberate on the matter, the scale of the damage caused by Low is simply inexcusable, according to the New Straits Times.
He expressed his firm support for Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani, asserting that Low does not deserve clemency. Fahmi stressed that no consideration should be given for forgiveness, given the gravity of the alleged offences and their impact on the nation.
He stressed that Low must return to face the courts and be held accountable, particularly as Johari currently serves as the chairman of the 1MDB Asset Recovery Taskforce.
Beyond the issues surrounding the 1MDB scandal, Fahmi also announced significant upcoming efforts to protect Malaysians from digital threats
A multi-agency retreat dedicated to combating online scams is scheduled for 23 and 24 May.
This initiative will focus on streamlining legal procedures and developing technical mechanisms to prevent fraudulent transfers from leaving bank accounts within the critical first 30 to 60 minutes of an incident.
Alongside these technical measures, Fahmi issued a stern reminder to parents to remain vigilant regarding the online safety of their children.
This warning comes in the wake of police reports detailing the arrest of 117 individuals involved in paedophilia-related crimes through enforcement actions such as Op Pedo and Op Cyber Guardian.
These remarks were made following the Lembah Pantai Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) Excellence Awards Ceremony, where the minister celebrated the achievements of 30 top-performing students who secured 5As and above
To further acknowledge the vital role of educators in the community, Fahmi announced a contribution of RM3,000 to every school in the Lembah Pantai constituency.
These funds are intended to facilitate upcoming Teachers' Day celebrations and serve as a gesture of appreciation for educators' role in nurturing the next generation of Malaysian talent.
